Good -
provides all day comfort for nurses who are on their feet all day
extremely durable with many customers who claim the shoes goes strong for two years and more even after wearing on a daily basis
available in a variety of styles for fashion options
material for upper portion of shoe makes for an easy to clean and maintain footwear
Bad -
expensive – each pair usually cost between $100 to $125, but for the amount of wear you get out of them you could easily go through 4 or more pairs of shoes that would end up costing even more. So in all actually, other than the upfront cost, this is still a top shoe for the price
So based on my personal experience with these shoes and what other Dansko nursing shoe wearers are saying, this is the professional nursing shoe of choice.

In an article taken from the University of Virginia, example of the causes and treatments of foot pain have been identified. One of those problems stem
s from being on your feet all day. It’s affectionately called “Plantar Fasciitis” and can really put a stop to anything you want or have to do if it has anything to do with being on your feet. The good news is that the comfort that comes with a pair of Dansko professional clogs can help alleviate this problem.
To understand more about this condition, check out the excerpt from the UAV article below.
plantar fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is characterized by severe pain in the heel of the foot, especially when standing up after resting. The condition is due to an overuse injury of the sole surface (plantar) of the foot and results in inflammation of the fascia, a tough, fibrous band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the base of the toes. Plantar fasciitis is more common in women, people who are overweight, people with occupations that require a lot of walking or standing on hard surfaces, people with flat feet, and people with high arches. Walking or running, especially with tight calf muscles, may also cause the condition.Treatment may include:
rest
ice pack applications
nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications
stretching exercises of the Achilles tendons and plantar fascia
Of course a doctor should be consulted in the case of serious medical conditions. But if you are looking for a solution that doesn’t require medical attention, then Dansko professional clogs just might be the answer.
Did you know that shoes can win awards? Okay, maybe awards is not the “appropriate” term in this case but even still, I never realized that shoes could receive recognition for well…greatness. In the case of Dansko nursing shoes, this holds true. And that greatness is rewarded in the form of a seal of approval by the APMA which stands for the American Podiatric Medical Association.
Now I don’t know about you but when I read this about the Dansko shoes, my first thought was, “the whozywhatsits?” But upon further reading I came to understand the importance of this organization. The APMA is a top professional organization that represents the nation’s podiatrists. And the seal of acceptance that is issued by the APMA is used to designate foot related products, such as shoes, that promote good foot health. It’s a confirmation that with Dansko shoes you get long lasting comfort and you gotta feel good about that.
In addition to the APMA seal of approval though, the Dansko nursing shoes were also put to the test…and passed, by two independent research laboratories to make sure they are suitable for wear in workplace environments such as hospitals. Rigorous testing was done by SATRA (the Shoe and Allied Trade Research Association out of the United Kingdom) and Precision Testing Laboratories from the United States using a multitude of different surface conditions.
Having said all this, back in 2004 Dansko did actually receive a reward from Footwear Plus Magazine. It was then that they were honored for excellence in the Women’s Comfort Category. And the award winning style continues still as in 2009 Dansko was given that award for the fourth time.
That being the case…I guess you could call the Dansko nursing shoe ~ award winning footwear.
So have you looked at a pair of Dansko nursing shoes and after shaking your head at the “style” of the footwear, still wonder to yourself what it is about these shoes that people like so much. Why are they so comfortable? Well, we’re going to break it down here because I’m like you. I can’t help but wonder why when you put one brand of shoe on it makes you feel like your walking on the clouds…even after pulling an 8 hours shift and another brand makes you feel like you’ve been walking on a bed of nails your entire shift. After doing a little research, this is what I discovered.
First, one of the reasons why Dansko nursing shoes are so comfortable is that they are essentially 7 uniquely different components of the shoe. Each individual piece contributes to the whole which is why you get the all-day comfort that Dansko is so well known for. Other shoes on the market, clogs included, are made of 4 or 5 components which reduces the opportunity for the extreme comfort that Dansko has.
The components of the Dansko nursing shoe are:
1. The premium quality leather upper that is designed to follow the natural contour of your foot. It’s flexible, not stiff which limits the “break-in” period depending on the leather type/model of shoe you choose.
2. The toe box is designed to provide to give your toes plenty of room “to get their groove on” in addition to give them plenty of protection from the toe dancing police. In other words…your toes have room to move.
3. The heelcounter is a natural shoehorn for you not to mention that is gives great lateral stability and lets the heel move freely in a natural up and down pattern while walking.
4. The socklining is made of antimicrobial leather which provides added comfort. (Okay so I have a confession to make, I don’t know what antimicrobial leather is either…I only know that it feels pretty good on the feet.)
5. The footbed is made of a breathable open-celled PU foam. And NO…that’s not for stinky . It actually stands for polyurethane and is very flexible and comfortable too.
6. The inner frame of the shoe is a polypropylene that also give lateral stability, while reducing torque placed on the shoe and ultimately your foot at every steps.
And finally comes…
7. The outsole where all the magic happens…okay, certainly not all of it but a large majority of the comfort comes in here. This is the component that takes all the shock and absorbs it. Plus, it gives you flexibility felt at every step. It’s a rocker-bottom sole that, as Dansko puts it…propels your foot forward. And my own personal benefit is the 2″ heel that can help me to overcome my vertically challenged issues.
Put all of these together and that is on heck of a comfortable shoe…but isn’t that what we want? I know it’s what we get with a pair of Dansko nursing shoes.
I was recently asked by a friend of mine, “When it comes to Dansko nursing shoes, which model is best for a nurse?”. I can totally understand the question because there are several varieties of Dansko shoes. And although the shoe is well worth the price, you do want to pick the best type of shoe for the environment you are working in. Plus, since these shoes have consistently lasted 3 years and more for nursing professionals, it would seem you’ll have this pair for awhile and you want to make sure it can accommodate your working conditions, far beyond the standing and walking for 12 hour or more shifts part.
So to answer the question, let’s categorize the options under two main headings. The first is style type and the second is leather type. We’ll begin with the style.
Dansko nursing shoes are a clog style with a closed toe design where your entire foot is covered. Essentially the most common style for nursing shoes is the stapled clogs. And actually the only option that may require your biggest decision is whether you want a closed or open heel. This decision is based on your preference more than anything. Although, the closed heel provides you with the most protection from your foot slipping out of the shoe.
From there the next most important issue is the leather upper. With these professional nursing shoes, the leather upper comes in 3 basic types. They are the cabrio leather, box leather, and oiled leather. Here are a few details about each leather type:
The cabrio leather ~ comes in a high gloss polish and is the most shiny of the three leather types. A little time spent wearing the shoe may be necessary to break it in. It’s easily maintained by wiping with a dry cloth. This leather type was originally designed as more of a style shoe rather than for any heavy duty work, but as in all Dansko shoes; because of its high quality, comfort, and durability many nurses have chosen this leather type for working in. It’s easily maintained by wiping with a dry cloth.
The box leather ~ of the three leather types, this one is the toughest and most durable for environments where wet, acidic, and greasy conditions exist. It comes with a smooth, clean, semi-gloss finish that is easily maintained with a damp soapy cloth or sponge. This type of leather has been indicated to have the longest break-in period but was also found to be an ideal leather for the hospital setting and a favorite of most nurses, doctors, chefs and others who work in a tough environment.
The oiled leather ~ probably the easiest of the three leathers to break-in and is commonly mistaken for suede. This leather has a heavily oiled finish to create a rugged moisture resistant shoe upper. But it is also easily stained and takes a little more effort to maintain, including keeping it weatherproof. However, retaining its “classic” Dansko look can be done by re-oiling with the Dansko oiled leather restorer.
Now, of course there are other Dansko shoe types and leathers but these are the most common in terms of Dansko nursing shoes. And although the Dansko stapled clog in box leather maybe the “ideal” nursing shoe based on its design and leather type, since all Dansko shoes are made with the same comfort and quality, the choice of style, leather, and lets not forget color, is really up to you.
Hopefully though, the information above will help you find your best, favorite Dansko nursing shoe.
If you’ve ever seen the size chart for a pair of Dansko nursing shoes you may be scratching your head trying to figure out who-on-earth would ever wear a size thirty something shoe. Well as odd as it might sound if you’re use to American measurements, that size is correct. However, that size is based on Europeon measurements. which differ greatly than those given in the United States. So here’s a little help in determining what size Dansko nursing shoes will fit you best.
First, it’s important to know that these shoes are designed just like any other clog on the market so they may feel a little big and bulky. That means that getting the right size would still result in a somewhat “loose” fit. From there though, here’s what you need to know.
To convert from an American size shoe measurement to European, simply add 30 to the size you would normally wear. So if you’re a size 9 American measurement, (like me), you would want to go with a size 39, (European), in your Dansko shoes. If you’re caught in the middle in your shoe size, such as a 9 1/2 or 9.5 then it’s recommended that you go up one size which would put you at a 40 European.
There are a few things to consider such as the sock you will be wearing with your shoes. If it’s of average thickness, then the size recommendation above wouldn’t change. However, if you wear a thicker sock then you may want to increase your shoe size and the opposite goes for a fairly thin sock.
The cut on the Dansko nursing shoes provides for about a medium width. Depending on the width of your foot, you may also have to adjust the shoe size you go with in order to accommodate a narrow or width.
The final item to consider is something you probably haven’t considered before. Well…at least it was new for me and something I wasn’t aware before learning more about comfortable footwear. When you try on your Dansko shoes, be sure and test them in the morning for proper fit…and in the afternoon. Now, you may be wondering why you would have to do both but here’s the deal. In the morning when you haven’t been standing all day, your feet are their normal size. In the afternoon there after doing quite of bit of walking and standing, your feet start to swell and as a result they expand and ultimately get bigger. And now you know why those shoes you thought that felt so good this morning when you put them on are somehow missing the mark this afternoon. (That just a little tidbit of info you can pass along to other now too.)
So there you have it when it comes to getting the right size for you Dansko nursing shoes, these are the things to keep in mind to help you get the best fit everytime.
I’m a big fan of Dansko Nursing Shoes. They provide many of the characteristics you want in a shoe that you wear while standing and walking for 8 – 12 hours shift and more. And these qualities aren’t found in just any pair of shoes. In fact, while some shoes may fit one or two of the criteria your searching for in professional footwear, Dansko meets all the qualifications to be the almost perfect nursing shoe. It gives you style, quality, durability, practicality, great value, and best of all… comfort.
Now while I have my own experience with Dansko nursing shoes. It’s important to hear what other Dansko owners have to say so here is video testimonial and quite honestly one of my favorites when it comes to the best nursing shoes reviews.
It’s the end of another long shift and your feet are aching from standing on them all day. And there’s no telling how many miles you put in from all of the walking. And as you travel on your way home you can’t help but wonder how in the world you might be able to get some foot pain relief. Of course the first thought to stay home tomorrow and just avoid work altogether isn’t really and option. So how about ploppin’ yourself on the couch, propping those barkin’ dogs up on the table in front of you and taking a look at the 3 best methods to help provide foot pain relief.
Give yourself a nice herbal foot bath – there are a lot of natural herbs and spices that provide a calming and soothing effect. In using them you will find their comforting and healing attributes offer more than just a pleasing fragrance. Though, that aroma does play a part in easing tensions and bringing about pain relief. Use a combination of lavender, salt, lemon, and peppermint to rejuvenate and re-energize tired and swollen feet. Or, make your own blend of favorites based on nature’s variety.
Treat yourself to frequent foot massages – Unless you are on the wee bit ticklish side, foot massages are the next best thing to walking on air when it comes to providing foot pain relief. Foot massages range from a nice soothing rub to deep tissue work. Putting pressure on the points of tension help to improve blood circulation and loosen the tight muscles in your feet causing them to relax. Based on some scientific studies, the additional benefit of foot massages is that they help speed up the removal of toxins in your body.
Buy yourself a pair of all-day comfort shoes – The best foot pain relief is prevention and the best way to prevent the foot pain your feeling is to buy a pair of shoes that will give you comfort the whole day through. Talk to your coworkers and see what they say. Many will recommend to you professional clogs because they have found them to provide the all-day comfort that is necessary in positions where walking and standing for the entire shift is part of the job.
