Why are they so comfortable? Well, we’re going to break it down here because I’m like you. I can’t help but wonder why when you put one brand of shoe on it makes you feel like your walking on the clouds…even after pulling an 8 hours shift and another brand makes you feel like you’ve been walking on a bed of nails your entire shift. After doing a little research, this is what I discovered.

First, one of the reasons why Dansko nursing shoes are so comfortable is that they are essentially 7 uniquely different components of the shoe. Each individual piece contributes to the whole which is why you get the all-day comfort that Dansko is so well known for. Other shoes on the market, clogs included, are made of 4 or 5 components which reduces the opportunity for the extreme comfort that Dansko has.

The components of the Dansko nursing shoe are:

1. The premium quality leather upper that is designed to follow the natural contour of your foot. It’s flexible, not stiff which limits the “break-in” period depending on the leather type/model of shoe you choose.

2. The toe box is designed to provide to give your toes plenty of room “to get their groove on” in addition to give them plenty of protection from the toe dancing police. In other words…your toes have room to move.

3. The heelcounter is a natural shoehorn for you not to mention that is gives great lateral stability and lets the heel move freely in a natural up and down pattern while walking.

6. The inner frame of the shoe is a polypropylene that also give lateral stability, while reducing torque placed on the shoe and ultimately your foot at every steps.

And finally comes…

7. The outsole where all the magic happens…okay, certainly not all of it but a large majority of the comfort comes in here. This is the component that takes all the shock and absorbs it. Plus, it gives you flexibility felt at every step. It’s a rocker-bottom sole that, as Dansko puts it…propels your foot forward. And my own personal benefit is the 2″ heel that can help me to overcome my vertically challenged issues.

Put all of these together and that is on heck of a comfortable shoe…but isn’t that what we want? I know it’s what we get with a pair of Dansko nursing shoes.

History of White Nursing Shoes

Have you ever wondered why nursing shoes, for the longest time, always came in the color of white? Did you know that it was only a short time ago that the shoes and entire uniform itself actually changed from the standard look of an all white dress, tights, and the white nursing shoes?

Because I found the topic interesting I did a little research to get some history on the entire nursing uniform including the shoes and where they came from. I wanted to pass along what I found out with the thought that you might find it interesting as well. So here goes….

It’s not certain necessarily where the nursing uniform idea began although there is some speculation that it started in the covenants with nuns. After all, they were the “original nurses.” Back during that time their outfits brought about a standard look of plain black and white.

However, there is another theory credits Florence Nightingale who determined the nurse’s outfit during the Crimean War. That uniform was a gray tweed, nearly floor length dress with long sleeves. In addition, a brown scarf and white cap was worn to carry a similar look that of the generation’s middle-class housewives. This helped to ensure that the nurses of the day were not mistaken for laundresses, camp followers, or cooks.

When the Civil War came along, the color of the dress changed but the style remained the same. Thick and uncomfortable, it was the same simple design in either black, gray, or brown but a white apron had been added. A white bonnet became part of the attire as well.

Just as white plays a significant role in the color of a wedding dress, so it did in the nursing uniform too. In the early 1900s white became the medical symbol of sterility. In an attempt to show the public that medical professionals’ jobs were clean and sterile and that there was a connection between cleanliness and the spread of illness and bacteria, the all white nursing uniform came about. The exception to that was their shoes which were still the color of…you guessed it, black. It was only after the invention of white shoe polish that the white nursing shoe became a staple in the all white nursing uniform which was the iconic symbol of the “angels of mercy”.

However, the 1960s were a time of change…and that change included the look of nursing uniforms. The impractical “classic nursing uniform” began to get rejected. Many factors played a role in this including the feminist movement. That is when the nurses cap was discarded and scrubs came into play. And though some nurses stayed with the “old-fashioned” look, it was at least modified to fit their needs.

And then came the 70s….which brought about even more changes. Hospitals no longer laundered nurses uniforms. Nurses started wearing pantsuits and those in specialized areas began wearing lab coats. Nurses fought for a more practical low maintenance look and they were victorious in the battle.

What you see today in hospitals and in medical offices are the results of their efforts. Colors and print on scrubs which bring fun, brightness, and comfort into the nursing outfit. And the white nursing shoes…well their still around as you can see. It’s just another option a nurses can choose from to go with their dog print top and baby blue pants.

Now I have to admit, when I first saw Dansko clogs…I didn’t really like them much. Okay, to be honest…I thought they were ugly. I even use to make jokes about them and my friends wearing them. They told me, “Go ahead, they are the most comfortable shoe you’ll ever wear and it doesn’t matter if you like them or not.” I thought, “hmm, okay.” And left it at that.

Well today, the tables have turned and I have changed my ways. I understand the comfort and actually, the look kind of grows on you…not to mention the fact that more than half the people you see either in a hospital or medical office setting actually wear nursing clogs.

Here’s the cool thing though. As Dansko’s popularity grew, so did their selection. They have a large number of models and styles for both women and men, and this even carries over to their nursing shoes. To give an example, I’d like to introduce the Dansko mary jane.

Now here’s the thing with the Mary Jane shoe. It has the same design for the footbed and sole, it’s leather type comes in the same options as the stapled professional clog does, and you get all the same great all-day comfort and long term durability as any other Dansko shoe. The biggest difference between stapled clogs and the Dansko Mary Janes are the look. And I have to admit this is a more stylish look than the stapled clogs have to offer.

With the Mary Jane you get more of an open shoe design across the top of your foot. And it has a strap that crosses over the top of the shoe that holds your foot securely in place. It’s a design that may be more suited for the medical office environment but it works fine in the hospital setting too.

Dansko Nursing Shoes – Which Model is Best for a Nurse?

I was recently asked by a friend of mine, “When it comes to Dansko nursing shoes, which model is best for a nurse?”. I can totally understand the question because there are several varieties of Dansko shoes. And although the shoe is well worth the price, you do want to pick the best type of shoe for the environment you are working in. Plus, since these shoes have consistently lasted 3 years and more for nursing professionals, it would seem you’ll have this pair for awhile and you want to make sure it can accommodate your working conditions, far beyond the standing and walking for 12 hour or more shifts part.

So to answer the question, let’s categorize the options under two main headings. The first is style type and the second is leather type. We’ll begin with the style.

Dansko nursing shoes are a clog style with a closed toe design where your entire foot is covered. Essentially the most common style for nursing shoes is the stapled clogs. And actually the only option that may require your biggest decision is whether you want a closed or open heel. This decision is based on your preference more than anything. Although, the closed heel provides you with the most protection from your foot slipping out of the shoe.

From there the next most important issue is the leather upper. With these professional nursing shoes, the leather upper comes in 3 basic types. They are the cabrio leather, box leather, and oiled leather. Here are a few details about each leather type:

The cabrio leather ~ comes in a high gloss polish and is the most shiny of the three leather types. A little time spent wearing the shoe may be necessary to break it in. It’s easily maintained by wiping with a dry cloth. This leather type was originally designed as more of a style shoe rather than for any heavy duty work, but as in all Dansko shoes; because of its high quality, comfort, and durability many nurses have chosen this leather type for working in. It’s easily maintained by wiping with a dry cloth.

The box leather ~ of the three leather types, this one is the toughest and most durable for environments where wet, acidic, and greasy conditions exist. It comes with a smooth, clean, semi-gloss finish that is easily maintained with a damp soapy cloth or sponge. This type of leather has been indicated to have the longest break-in period but was also found to be an ideal leather for the hospital setting and a favorite of most nurses, doctors, chefs and others who work in a tough environment.

The oiled leather ~ probably the easiest of the three leathers to break-in and is commonly mistaken for suede. This leather has a heavily oiled finish to create a rugged moisture resistant shoe upper. But it is also easily stained and takes a little more effort to maintain, including keeping it weatherproof. However, retaining its “classic” Dansko look can be done by re-oiling with the Dansko oiled leather restorer.

Now, of course there are other Dansko shoe types and leathers but these are the most common in terms of Dansko nursing shoes. And although the Dansko stapled clog in box leather maybe the “ideal” nursing shoe based on its design and leather type, since all Dansko shoes are made with the same comfort and quality, the choice of style, leather, and lets not forget color, is really up to you.
