Why Clog Nursing Shoes are the Best Choice for Your Nursing Footwear

clog nursing shoesA pair of high quality clog nursing shoes is an essential item for you as a nursing professional. This is especially true since you spend a greater amount of the day on your feet and often on very hard surfaces.

Although the job is fulfilling, extending care and service with a smile could be quite a challenge for you without the appropriate footwear.

If you are still contemplating if a pair of clog nursing shoes is worth the investment, here are five (5) benefits to guide you in carefully weighing your options:

1. Heel and Balance Support
Clog nursing shoes are ergonomically designed and are built on a raised base to provide complete support for your feet. These are important features for this type of shoes because lack of support results in leg and back pains which could eventually affect your balance. The design allows for a rolling motion when your walk where the heels move freely. It has extra padding for sensitive soles and shock absorption.

2. Hygienic
Clog nursing shoes have a unique feature that allows enough air to circulate around the foot. Some have wooden inner-sole which maintains a drier feet over a long period of time. With a good pair of socks, you need not worry about having sweaty and smelly feet.

3. Slip Resistant
Clogs come with slip resistant soles to ensure a better grip. This would come handy when you are working on slippery surfaces or when you are required to move heavy objects.

4. Adequate Protection
With a close toed design, clogs have the ability to protect your feet from being injured. It is sturdy enough to withstand the potential damage that can be caused by heavy objects or sharp instruments that are accidentally dropped on your foot. Think also of the hazardous materials that can possibly infect your foot if you are without adequate protection.

5. Overall Comfort
A great deal of research was spent in making sure that these clogs can maintain a high level of comfort during long days of standing and walking. They conform to the shape of the feet and not stiff so that constant walking is not a painful task for you to bear. Shoes made out of leather are considered to be an excellent choice for taking the natural shape of your feet. So when you shop for your pair of clog nursing shoes, check if this is made of the finest quality leather.

If you have been standing for hours on end, it is really nice to step out of your shoes and stand barefoot. You can then massage the nerves and pressure points in your feet to help you relax and

recharge for the next activity. This is the reason why clogs nursing shoes are great because they are designed to slip off easily and let your feet breathe.

Being a member of the nursing profession, your feet are your valuable assets and must be protected at all times. Investing in high quality clog nursing shoes will guarantee your consistent and top notch performance at work.

Dankso Nursing Shoes ~ Award Winning Comfort

Dansko nursing shoe black boxDid you know that shoes can win awards?  Okay, maybe awards is not the “appropriate” term in this case but even still, I never realized that shoes could receive recognition for well…greatness.  In the case of Dansko nursing shoes, this holds true.  And that greatness is rewarded in the form of a seal of approval by the APMA which stands for the American Podiatric Medical Association.

Now I don’t know about you but when I read this about the Dansko shoes, my first thought was, “the whozywhatsits?”  But upon further reading I came to understand the importance of this organization.  The APMA is a top professional organization that represents the nation’s podiatrists.  And the seal of acceptance that is issued by the APMA is used to designate foot related products, such as shoes, that promote good foot health.  It’s a confirmation that with Dansko shoes you get long lasting comfort and you gotta feel good about that.

In addition to the APMA seal of approval though, the Dansko nursing shoes were also put to the test…and passed, by two independent  research laboratories to make sure they are suitable for wear in workplace environments such as hospitals.  Rigorous testing was done by SATRA (the Shoe and Allied Trade Research Association out of the United Kingdom) and Precision Testing Laboratories from the United States using a multitude of different surface conditions.

Having said all this, back in 2004 Dansko did actually receive a reward from Footwear Plus Magazine.  It was then that they were honored for excellence in the Women’s Comfort Category.  And the award winning style continues still as in 2009 Dansko was given that award for the fourth time.

That being the case…I guess you could call the Dansko nursing shoe ~ award winning footwear.  :)

What Makes Dankso Nursing Shoes so Comfortable?

Dansko nursing shoes

Dansko nursing shoes

So have you looked at a pair of Dansko nursing shoes and after shaking your head at the “style” of the footwear, still wonder to yourself what it is about these shoes that people like so much.  Why are they so comfortable?  Well, we’re going to break it down here because I’m like you.  I can’t help but wonder why when you put one brand of shoe on it makes you feel like your walking on the clouds…even after pulling an 8 hours shift and another brand makes you feel like you’ve been walking on a bed of nails your entire shift.  After doing a little research, this is what I discovered.

First, one of the reasons why Dansko nursing shoes are so comfortable is that they are essentially 7 uniquely different components of the shoe.  Each individual piece contributes to the whole which is why you get the all-day comfort that Dansko is so well known for.  Other shoes on the market, clogs included, are made of 4 or 5 components which reduces the opportunity for the extreme comfort that Dansko has.

The components of the Dansko nursing shoe are:

1.  The premium quality leather upper that is designed to follow the natural contour of your foot.  It’s flexible, not stiff which limits the “break-in” period depending on the leather type/model of shoe you choose.

2.  The toe box is designed to provide to give your toes plenty of room “to get their groove on” in addition to give them plenty of protection from the toe dancing police.  :)   In other words…your toes have room to move.

3.  The heelcounter is a natural shoehorn for you not to mention that is gives great lateral stability and lets the heel move freely in a natural up and down pattern while walking.

4.  The socklining is made of antimicrobial leather which provides added comfort.  (Okay so I have a confession to make, I don’t know what antimicrobial leather is either…I only know that it feels pretty good on the feet.)

5.  The footbed is made of a breathable open-celled PU foam.  And NO…that’s not for stinky ;-) .  It actually stands for polyurethane and is very flexible and comfortable too.

6.  The inner frame of the shoe is a polypropylene that also give lateral stability, while reducing torque placed on the shoe and ultimately your foot at every steps.

And finally comes…

7.  The outsole where all the magic happens…okay, certainly not all of it but a large majority of the comfort comes in here.  This is the component that takes all the shock and absorbs it.  Plus, it gives you flexibility felt at every step.  It’s a rocker-bottom sole that, as Dansko puts it…propels your foot forward.  And my own personal benefit is the 2″ heel that can help me to overcome my vertically challenged issues.

Put all of these together and that is on heck of a comfortable shoe…but isn’t that what we want?  I know it’s what we get with a pair of Dansko nursing shoes.

Dansko Nursing Shoes – Which Model is Best for a Nurse?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Dansko nursing shoes types of leatherI was recently asked by a friend of mine, “When it comes to Dansko nursing shoes, which model is best for a nurse?”.  I can totally understand the question because there are several varieties of Dansko shoes.  And although the shoe is well worth the price,  you do want to pick the best type of shoe for the environment you are working in.  Plus, since these shoes have consistently lasted 3 years and more for nursing professionals, it would seem you’ll have this pair for awhile and you want to make sure it can accommodate your working conditions, far beyond the standing and walking for 12 hour or more shifts part. :)

So to answer the question, let’s categorize the options under two main headings.  The first is style type and the second is leather type.  We’ll begin with the style.

Dansko nursing shoes are a clog style with a closed toe design where your entire foot is covered.  Essentially the most common style for nursing shoes is the stapled clogs.  And actually the only option that may require your biggest decision is whether you want a closed or open heel.  This decision is based on your preference more than anything.  Although, the closed heel provides you with the most protection from your foot slipping out of the shoe.

From there thdansko nursing shoes black cabrioe next most important issue is the leather upper.  With these professional nursing shoes, the leather upper comes in 3 basic types.  They are the cabrio leather, box leather, and oiled leather.  Here are a few details about each leather type:

The cabrio leather ~ comes in a high gloss polish and is the most shiny of the three leather types.  A little time spent wearing the shoe may be necessary to break it in.  It’s easily maintained by wiping with a dry cloth.  This leather type was originally designed as more of a style shoe rather than for any heavy duty work, but as in all Dansko shoes; because of its high quality, comfort, and durability many nurses have chosen this leather type for working in.  It’s Dansko nursing shoes box whiteeasily maintained by wiping with a dry cloth.

The box leather ~ of the three leather types, this one is the toughest and most durable for environments where wet, acidic, and greasy conditions exist.  It comes with a smooth, clean, semi-gloss finish that is easily maintained with a damp soapy cloth or sponge.  This type of leather has been indicated to have the longest break-in period but was also found to be an ideal leather for the hospital setting and a favorite of most nurses, doctors, chefs and others who work in a tough environment.

Dansko Nursing Shoes Brown oiledThe oiled leather ~  probably the easiest of the three leathers to break-in and is commonly mistaken for suede.  This leather has a heavily oiled finish to create a rugged moisture resistant shoe upper.  But it is also easily stained and takes a little more effort to maintain, including keeping it weatherproof.  However, retaining its “classic” Dansko look can be done by re-oiling with the Dansko oiled leather restorer.

Now, of course there are other Dansko shoe types and leathers but these are the most common in terms of Dansko nursing shoes.  And although the Dansko stapled clog in box leather maybe the “ideal” nursing shoe based on its design and leather type, since all Dansko shoes are made with the same comfort and quality, the choice of style, leather, and lets not forget color, is really up to you.

Hopefully though, the information above will help you find your best, favorite Dansko nursing shoe.
